Pediatric Dental Practice of Dr. Viena Posada:  Supporting Your Child

Dear Parents,

You may choose whether or not you accompany your child to his/her appointment.  Although we sense that some children do better without parents present, we are open to having you with your child.  If you choose to be present, we suggest the following guideline to improve chances of a positive outcome:

Allow us to prepare your child.

Be supportive of the practice's terminology.

Please be a silent observer - support your child with touches. Here's why:

This allows us to maintain communications with your child

Children will normally listen to their parents instead of us and may not hear our guidance

You may give incorrect or misleading information by mistake

Many children will try to control the situation

"Acting out" is normal, but unacceptable during fillings

We will continue to support your child at all times

Be ready to immediately walk away.

Changes in Medical History

Many medical conditions, behavioral issues and medications will affect your child's dental health. Please keep us advised of any changes since the last visit.

These are very important ways that you can actively help in the success of your child's visit.  We are confident that all will go well and hope these guidelines will help prepare you and your child with confidence for upcoming appointments.

We try to avoid words that would scare the child due to previous experiences.  Please support us by NOT USING negative words that are often used for dental care.  These include:

PLEASE DON'T USE:

needle or shot

drill

drill the tooth

pull or yank a tooth

decay or cavity

examination

tooth cleaning

explorer

rubber dam

gas

USE OUR LANGUAGE INSTEAD:

sleepy juice

whistle/cleaner

clean a tooth

wiggle a tooth out

sugar bug

count teeth

tickle teeth

toothpick

raincoat

magic nose

Using more contemporary language will also help you understand your child's description of the experience.  Our intention is not to fool your child -- it is to create a positive dental experience.
